Get out your pink boots for The Hike to End Breast Cancer

Looking for a fun and worthwhile activity the whole family can enjoy?  Then check out the Hike to End Breast Cancer on Sunday May 31 in Chicago Park.  This charity event will include a variety of activities beginning at 1pm at Elegant Salvage, 16282 Mt Olive Road near the corner of Colfax Hwy.

A 3.9 mile fun hike starts at 2pm along the historic Narrow Gauge Trail.  This will be followed by a trail run at 2:45, with great prizes in men, women, and youth runner categories.  Hikers and runners can preregister on the event page, or register at the event starting at 1pm.

You don’t have to be a runner to win one of the fantastic prizes.  There will be a competition for the best pink outfits, as well!  Hikers and runners alike are encouraged to put their best pink-clad foot forward, and prizes will be awarded to the best dressed individual and group.

You won’t want to miss the raffle!  Dozens of local businesses have donated amazing prizes, including Rhythms Fitness Studio, Olive Vitality, Briar Patch, Yuba Blue, Hair’s to You salon, Lucchesi Winery, S.O.A.P., and so many more!  Raffle tickets are only $1 in advance, and you don’t have to be present to win, so don’t let this opportunity pass you by!

In addition to the hike and run, a craft fair and bake sale will be held outside of Elegant Salvage from 1 to 4pm.  It will feature a variety of locally made items, from unique teapot lamps to natural health products, and of course lots of delicious pink treats!
Proceeds from the Hike will help The Itty Bitty Titty Committee meet our fundraising goals for the Avon39, which provides mammograms to women in need, funds research for a cure, and supports other breast cancer awareness programs.

Why 39?

The Itty Bitty Titty Committee is often asked “Why is it called Avon39?  What is the 39 for?”

The answer to that is simple – the walk is 39.3 miles in length.  This will take us 2 days to complete.  Day one is longer than day two, with some detours to what would otherwise be an out-and-back walk.  The walk starts and finishes at Fort Mason on the northern San Francisco peninsula.  The walk winds through the hills of the City, and then heads over the Golden Gate Bridge and into Marin County.  The thousands of walkers will stop for the night near San Rafael and then walk back to Fort Mason.

39.3 miles doesn’t seem far when you’re driving, but it sure is a long way to walk – even when done over 2 days!  In the book-turned-movie “Wild,” Cheryl’s goal in walking the PCT was 20 miles per day, which she struggled to reach.  Granted, she was carrying a big backpack, but even pack-less it is not an easy distance.  More importantly, unlike Cheryl, the Itty Bitty Titty Committee is training hard to prepare for this distance by building up our strength and stamina over the next few months.

Want to get a taste of what the Walk to End Breast Cancer is like?  Come to our 3.9 mile Hike to End Breast Cancer on May 31st at 2pm.  At just 10% of the distance of the Avon39, it’s a great opportunity for your whole family to get outside and help to win the fight against End Breast Cancer.
