We're back for the 2016 Avon39!

The Itty Bitty Titty Committee of Nevada City is back in action!  We're preparing to do the 2016 Avon39: Walk to End Breast Cancer.  This event will be held June 4-5, when we'll again walk 39.3 miles - but this time around Chicago.  This will be Bo's third Avon walk, and Meri's second.

While this may seem like a long time from now, we are beginning fundraising earlier this year so that we can surpass our team goal of $3600! Please show your support for our team by sharing this with your family and friends, and donating by clicking here.

We did it!

The big weekend finally arrived!  On Saturday and Sunday, the Itty Bitty Titty Committee walked a beautiful route of 39.3 miles (including over 150 stairs, and lots of big hills!) in San Francisco, over the Golden Gate Bridge, and through Sausalito to Corte Madera for a night in a pink tent, then back again.

Our team raised a little over $3600 with your help, contributing to a total raised by all the walkers of $4.6 million dollars!  This was awarded at the closing ceremony to many organizations to help provide meals and rides to women undergoing breast cancer treatment, mammograms to underprivileged women, and research into improved treatments and finding a cure.

Get out your pink boots for The Hike to End Breast Cancer

Looking for a fun and worthwhile activity the whole family can enjoy?  Then check out the Hike to End Breast Cancer on Sunday May 31 in Chicago Park.  This charity event will include a variety of activities beginning at 1pm at Elegant Salvage, 16282 Mt Olive Road near the corner of Colfax Hwy.

A 3.9 mile fun hike starts at 2pm along the historic Narrow Gauge Trail.  This will be followed by a trail run at 2:45, with great prizes in men, women, and youth runner categories.  Hikers and runners can preregister on the event page, or register at the event starting at 1pm.

You don’t have to be a runner to win one of the fantastic prizes.  There will be a competition for the best pink outfits, as well!  Hikers and runners alike are encouraged to put their best pink-clad foot forward, and prizes will be awarded to the best dressed individual and group.

You won’t want to miss the raffle!  Dozens of local businesses have donated amazing prizes, including Rhythms Fitness Studio, Olive Vitality, Briar Patch, Yuba Blue, Hair’s to You salon, Lucchesi Winery, S.O.A.P., and so many more!  Raffle tickets are only $1 in advance, and you don’t have to be present to win, so don’t let this opportunity pass you by!

In addition to the hike and run, a craft fair and bake sale will be held outside of Elegant Salvage from 1 to 4pm.  It will feature a variety of locally made items, from unique teapot lamps to natural health products, and of course lots of delicious pink treats!
Proceeds from the Hike will help The Itty Bitty Titty Committee meet our fundraising goals for the Avon39, which provides mammograms to women in need, funds research for a cure, and supports other breast cancer awareness programs.

Why 39?

The Itty Bitty Titty Committee is often asked “Why is it called Avon39?  What is the 39 for?”

The answer to that is simple – the walk is 39.3 miles in length.  This will take us 2 days to complete.  Day one is longer than day two, with some detours to what would otherwise be an out-and-back walk.  The walk starts and finishes at Fort Mason on the northern San Francisco peninsula.  The walk winds through the hills of the City, and then heads over the Golden Gate Bridge and into Marin County.  The thousands of walkers will stop for the night near San Rafael and then walk back to Fort Mason.

39.3 miles doesn’t seem far when you’re driving, but it sure is a long way to walk – even when done over 2 days!  In the book-turned-movie “Wild,” Cheryl’s goal in walking the PCT was 20 miles per day, which she struggled to reach.  Granted, she was carrying a big backpack, but even pack-less it is not an easy distance.  More importantly, unlike Cheryl, the Itty Bitty Titty Committee is training hard to prepare for this distance by building up our strength and stamina over the next few months.

Want to get a taste of what the Walk to End Breast Cancer is like?  Come to our 3.9 mile Hike to End Breast Cancer on May 31st at 2pm.  At just 10% of the distance of the Avon39, it’s a great opportunity for your whole family to get outside and help to win the fight against End Breast Cancer.

Mammograms save lives!

Yesterday when I was stuck in the doctor office waiting room, the Queen Latifah show was on the TV, and the subject was breast cancer.   Though I only caught the end of the show, one statistic stuck in my mind that I wanted to share with you:

A 30% decrease in deaths among breast cancer patients since 1990 can be attributed to the increase of preventative mammograms.

We all know early detection saves lives.  But I for one had no idea of how true this is until I heard this statistic.  And there’s more good news: mammogram testing has improved greatly in recent years, so it’s no longer the uncomfortable or painful experience it used to be!

It is recommended that women get tested for breast cancer annually once reaching the age of 40.

A $200 donation to our Avon39 team can provide a mammogram to a woman who couldn’t otherwise afford it.  Just think, it only takes $200 to save the life of a mother, a sister, a daughter.  One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their life time… If you think of eight women in your own life, what price would you put on just one of their lives?

Donate today, it only takes a minute to help save a life!  Click here to donate online, or contact us to learn more.

Mile 1 Update - At the Daffodil Walk

The Itty Bitty Titty Committee kicked off our training this week with the Penn Valley Daffodil 5K Run/Walk!

The beautiful spring weather was perfect for a walk around the regional park and town, and hundreds of people turned out to participate.  The warm spring we’d experienced this year meant that all the daffodils had come and gone by weekend of the Daffodil 5K, but plenty of other flowers were in abundance along the route.
Our team is also on track to meet our fundraising goal!  We’ve each raised about 7% of the $1,800 we are required to raise to participate in the Avon39 Walk to End Breast Cancer, in about 7% of the time until the walk.

But we’re only at "mile 1" and certainly far from done.  We will be walking further and further each week as we progress in our training… and we can’t meet our financial goals without your support!  Donating only takes a minute, and there’s no amount to small (or big!).  Click here to donate to our team now!

A Sweet Start

To kick off our fundraising drive, the Itty Bitty Titty Committee spent the week crafting little pink bags with a sweet surprise inside.

The first step was a trip to the Jelly Belly factory, where we sampled every pink flavor of jelly bean available to determine which was the most delicious.  Gosh, this fundraising is hard work!

After a lengthy planning trip to the craft store, Bo cut and stitched dozens of bags, complete with attached matching ribbon.

We then sorted the jelly beans.  Each bag has 14 beans in it – this represents the number of hours it will take us to complete the 39.3 mile walk.

Meri made pink cards (and this website!) to attach to the bags.

Now all we need to do is spread the word, and all we need you to do is take a minute to donate to the Walk to End Breast Cancer!  Click here to make your donation now!

Why we walk

Welcome to the brand new website of the Itty Bitty Titty Committee!  We committee members (Meri and Bo) are already working hard at training and fundraising for this year's San Francisco Avon39 Walk to End Breast Cancer.  Check back often to see how we're doing at meeting our physical and financial goals!  In the meantime, here's a great little video to tell you more about why we walk.
