The Itty Bitty Titty Committee is often asked “Why is it
called Avon39? What is the 39 for?”
The answer to that is simple – the walk is 39.3 miles in
length. This will take us 2 days to
complete. Day one is longer
than day two, with some detours to what would otherwise be an
out-and-back walk. The walk starts and
finishes at Fort Mason on the northern San Francisco peninsula. The walk winds through the hills of the City,
and then heads over the Golden Gate Bridge and into Marin County. The thousands of walkers will stop for the
night near San Rafael and then walk back to Fort Mason.
39.3 miles doesn’t seem far when you’re driving, but it sure
is a long way to walk – even when done over 2 days! In the book-turned-movie “Wild,” Cheryl’s goal in
walking the PCT was 20 miles per day, which she struggled to reach. Granted, she was
carrying a big backpack, but even pack-less it is not an easy distance. More importantly, unlike Cheryl, the Itty Bitty Titty Committee is training hard to prepare for this distance by building up our strength and stamina over the next few months.
